Last night, Senate Democrats discussed the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) Act, a provision currently included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R.3590).

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I) last night proposed an amendment (S.AMDT.2870) to H.R.3590 that would protect the CLASS premiums from being used for other purposes.

Some fiscally conservative members of the Senate are calling for the removal of the CLASS Act, citing a report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) that noted the program would be deficit-producing by 2030.

However, while it may in fact be deficit-producing during certain periods throughout its existence, it will also be deficit-reducing at other periods. Moreover, the program is designed to be self-sustaining for at least 75 years.
